Nine countries in Africa and the Middle East have been upgraded in terms of their country risk ratings moving into the second quarter of 2024. Notable upgrades have been based on factors such as the successful conclusion of elections and orderly political transitions in Senegal and Liberia; progress on debt stabilisation in Egypt, Kenya, and Zambia; and lifting of regional sanctions in military-led states. However, South Africa and Mauritius have been downgraded ahead of their tense electoral cycles, while Sierra Leone is facing a serious deterioration of its political, economic, and security climate.
