In response to its deadliest month since the Islamist insurgency began almost ten years ago, Burkina Faso’s military government is implementing a new counterinsurgency strategy and has appointed a new military leadership. A general mobilisation of men of fighting age is unlikely to have a major impact, but the deployment of Turkish TB2 drones will allow for more offensive operations against insurgents. Regardless of any future counterinsurgency successes, the reputation of the military is tarnished by recent massacres of ethnic Peul communities allegedly perpetrated by soldiers or allied auxiliaries.
